Web Design vs Web Master/Mistress
Posted 05-20-2008 at 07:02 PM by Darrell Lawrence
I've been asked before what the difference is between being a web designer and a web master/mistress.
I've been both.
A web designer is like an artist- The person thinks up a particular "look"... a layout... of what a web page/site will look like.
A web master/mistress, on the other hand, is more like a writer. They get to fill the web design with the text you read. The articles. The news. The trivia and such.
A web designer can complete the appearance of the web site and be done with it.
A web master/mistress, however, has to keep the information on the web site up to date daily/weekly/monthly.
As I said earlier, I have been both. And still am. I have three websites that I own and operate. I designed them and maintain them.
I'll do a follow up later in regards to many of the websites I have had a hand in.

I'd make a better designer than webminister. I couldn't keep something updated all the time (of course if it was weekly or monthly that would be a little different) but kudos to everyone who can keep up with the pace. This site is smashing! Great new look and we all have blogs and photo albums now! One day I'll figure out how stuff works around here!

I'm a web designerI would say I'm a web designer. I haven't had to maintain a web site on a daily basis. I would love to do that. It would be so much fun!

Well, I designed and built my website, and *that* was work. I also maintain it but it's just fictional stories so there really isn't much in the way of maintaining, no forums or anything. But I have the greatest admiration for both 'sides' of the aisle. My son also does his own stuff, but mainly he does the animations (freelance adverts for various businesses out in CA where he lives). I keep asking him to show me how to do that and he just gives me "that" look.

Hi Warrior
I'm thinking of creating a website (for a business I hope to start up) any suggestions? Should I go on a course/read a book and try to do it myself, or get a 'professional'? All help gratefully received! Fee xx |
