Default Desert Island Discs

You are cordially invited to choose 8 records you would take to a desert island.

You are also allowed to have a religious book, eg Bible (if you so wish) and ONE other book.

You are also allowed ONE luxury item (you would be provided with everything necessary to survive on the island, but you would be alone).

This format 'forces' you to choose not necessarily your 'favourite' songs, but ones you would want to have with you to perhaps help you through the loneliness and/or to remember loved ones/ your past life, etc.

See for example
https://www.bbc.co.uk/radio4/factual/...20061105.shtml

(In the radio show, the presenter then asks the guest which ONE record they would keep if some catastrophe happened and they could only save one of the 8 records, hence at the bottom of the web-link it says 'Record'.)

It's not so easy to do!

Good luck, and I'm really looking forward to EVERYONE's answers!

xx

So the 8 records are
John Denver Live
Best of Chris Issak
Best of Rick Astley
The Very best of Dolly Parton
Nadja Salerno Sonneberg Vivaldi's four seasons, Tchaikovsky & Assad: Concertos in D major, Brahms: Violin Concerto in D/Bruch: Concerto #1 in G Minor

A CD that I would make of my kids voices, music and various other experiences at different times

The books would be the aryuveda book of healing as a religious book because I know the bible well enough all ready, and The Awakening by Kate Chopin

The luxury Item would be a laptop with a solar charger and a sattelite internet connection / web cam / all built in so I could have email and access to as much music / email and news as I wanted, I could also write. That luxury item seems like a cheat, but it is available, so I guess it could count LOL

Peace Love Hope Faith and bancha

Ha! It's not so easy, I forgot to say that you can only choose 'singles' not LPs!
For classical music, one should specify the movement, etc, if it is a 'long' piece.

What a strange and rather scary idea, sort of being banished to a deserted island ....

Mmmm, only 8 tracks .... that's tough!

Probably would be (at least for now):

Casta diva (by Maria Callas)
E lucevan le stelle (by Placido Domingo)
Boléro (by Ravel)
The blue Danube (by André Rieu orchestra)
May it be (by Enya)
Calypso (by John Denver)
Scarborough fair (by Simon and Garfunkel)
Killer queen (by Queen)

Half classical, half popular music, to keep a sort of balance.

And books:

definitely Lord of the Rings (by Tolkien) for a long, long read
and instead of a religious book I would take one on Surviving on a deserted island for dummies.

And one luxury item ... how about a game computer, with a solar charger of course (smart, Shastastar!) to cope with boredom and loniless?

That's all I can come up with now, seriously hope it will never happen!

Also nice ones, Ostarella! Isn't easy to have to restrict yourself to only 8 ...

Btw Deebee, which tracks, books and luxury item would you choose?

Sorry I haven't added mine yet, it's too difficult, what to choose, what to leave out! Well, it's better to think of this than to do my work! I'll try to add mine soon.

Please everyone, your choices are most welcome!

Thanks everyone for your choices! In the Mood, v tempting to put it on my list, and Abba too!

Right, here's my first stab at this!

1. Nina Simone - Feeling good
https://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=J8px9XnrlV8

2. The Beatles - Here comes the sun
https://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=yGKPHFrHVVY

3. The Bealtes - Let it Be
https://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=67J_66hdN-I

4. Rachmaninov - Piano Concerto 2 (Movement 3)
https://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=1RXnor...eature=related

5. Tammi Terrell & Marvin Gaye - The Onion Song
https://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=iVlqA86KTM8

6. Stevie Wonder - Fingertips (Live, 1963)
https://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=EIfgwNJkCMI

7. Tina Charles - I love to love
https://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=-wHLkHwhu40

8. Cornershop - Brimful of Asha (Fatboy Slim remix)
https://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=XniTypXFje4

EDIT - I can't believe I haven't been able to squeeze some Abba, Monkees or Bruce Springsteen on there!

Record: 4 - only coz it is more complicated than the rest, and I'd be able to sing all the lyrics of the other songs after a week on the island!

Book: Adrian Neison - Practical boat building for amateurs
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Practical-Bo...028320&sr=1-11

OK, if that wasn't allowed , then
Robert M Pirsig - Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Zen-Art-Moto...2032713&sr=1-1
because I first came across it on a college reading list, and again several people have recommended it to me over the years since. I bought the book, and still haven't read it yet ... so maybe that would be the place and time I could sit down and read it!

Luxury: Ray Mears

Not only do I have the bonus that he's a survival expert MAN, but he's a little bit plump. So you know he know's how not to starve.
Also, if push comes to shove ... he'd last a bit further and be a bit juicier (on the spit) than some skinny old person !

OK, I'm sure he wouldn't want to be stuck on an island with me, specially if I start licking my lips and looking at him as a giant steak, so err ....

I'm tempted to say 'An anchored yacht (George Clooney's answer!), but ...

I would love to have all the books on my amazon wish list!

Apparently this is the longest running radio programme, with the first one broadcast in 1942!

The thing about having only 8 songs to listen to is why I chose mostly comedy tracks. I figure if I'm going to an island for an undisclosed amount of time, really I'd want there to be something that would make me laugh. I wouldn't listen to anything everyday, either. The thing about the 2 books, well, I choose one that would make me laugh and one that I would only read sporadically. One that I could eventually get done and probably be able to quote if given the time but that would take a long time. So in a way, I choose things I wouldn't tire of after a short while.

I'm thinking along "survival" mode with the choices there. You know, if it were a reality and I was going to an island (hopefull a really warm island where I would have the necessities to stay alive) I would start with the baby steps on how to swim longer lengths in the ocean. Start practicing on breathing techniques, how to hold my breath like scuba divers do. I would begin to learn how to live and survive like the island does. In that frame of mind, when one can blend in rather than look at the situation as a thing to fear, then it becomes easier to cope with and it's not traumatic. So my musical choices were such. Normally I would have had alot more ABBA, some Blondie, Olivia, loads of movie soundtracks, Monkees, Imca Marina, Ivan Rebroff, Andrew Lloyd Webber, and so on and I'd try to cram it all into those 8 selected tracks.

I can understand why the show has been so successful, even after all those years. It's really interesting in general to find out what someone would want to take along and why, but in particular if it's one of our fellow members! I enjoyed reading about your choices, although I do not know all the tracks mentioned. Hope more members will give their input ...

And Deebee, I thought only inanimated objects were allowed as luxury items .... Ray Smears, indeed ! If the luxury item can be someone alive and kicking I would choose to take our own Dirk with me to the deserted island .... Having a good MB cook around might come in handy ...

I wondered if the format had been sold around the world, but looks like it hasn't!

They do play them on BBC World Service radio, so you might be able to hear the show via that (sorry don't know how to listen to the radio via pc!). It's partly a rouse to make people talk about their life, and it's a way to learn something about the person that you often don't get to hear on a 'typical' interview.

Asmay - yes my choice of 'Ray Mears' LOL - not 'Smears'! is a total cheat , and so too are the anchored yacht and book wish list. I'm still trying to think of something on that!

Btw, I forgot to say, that as well as a religious tome, one is given the complete works of William Shakespeare (remember this is an English-centric format begun during the 2nd WW).

LOL - so much I forgot to say!

I'd love to hear other FM choices too!

PS, So many of the ones above I don't know either! So, if you can edit YT links of examples (or near enough) in, that would be great for (lazy) me!

Same here. But the concept of the show is quite intriguing and will probably never be oldfashioned or out of date, since the (taste of the) guests could connect the listeners to all sorts of music and literature.

I listen to talk show radio on the actual radio but never heard of that show and I wouldn't know what to do with radio streams on the internet. I don't listen to any programs, games or the like on the internet. One, they tend to freeze up my screen. Two, I don't have the time. Even the Chess widget someone sent to me on MS wouldn't open for me but I don't play online games anyway so I just didn't bother. Streams, feeds, whatever I just don't connect to them because it does mess up my screen. Probably need a new one.

How in blazes am I supposed to choose 8 songs?? That's hard! I'll have to think about this for a while and come back to it.

I download songs using real player and I often copy on to a disk.
Then you can chose more than eight.

Hi Aphrodite! *waves*
Do I know you from somewhere? *just kidding!*

Difficult, isn't it, to restrict yourself to only eight song titles? I think the main probvlem is that your choice is always going to be influenced strongly by the mood you're in at the particular time of choice. I mean, right now I would probably pick out other songs than I did earlier in this thread. Or a few at least ....

But it's a great concept for a show, you got to give them credit for that!
