I was trying to cut down on the diet coke, but then found I was drinking a lot more on the low-calorie diet, just to get some flavor with 0 calories. I know it isn't good for you, though. I'm just switching to Stevia now (Erythritol?) I don't know... It's supposed to be better for you. I need to start drinking tea without sweetener. When I was a kid my grandma always made me "gramma tea" - which is irish tea with whole milk and sugar. When I got older I switched to 2% milk and the saccharine. Which, at the time, was supposed to be healthy... Yeah, I'm sure this new fad will prove to be detrimental too.

I'm not adding anything to the Bancha tea. Right now I'm drinking Kukicha, which is good, but I don't like the flavor quite as much as the Bancha. It tastes more bitter to me. Since Bancha has more caffeine I could drink it during the day, and have the Kukicha at night. I'll try the Genmaicha next.

P.S. You guys are helping me out a LOT. I'll take a dollar if you have it.
I only have stainless steel cooking pots and pans.

During the day I drink only water, miso, decaf coffee or tea and nothing else. I used to have what I call bad Sugar dips in the morning and the afternoon, but after I've started with macro they're all gone Lucky me. I do allow myself to have a drink with stevia after dinner. It is supposed to be a more natural form of a sweetener.

I never add anything to the Bancha or the Genmaicha or Sencha. The people in the store told me Bancha was low on caffeine ??? When I have one at night, I tend to feel all sleepy.

Sorry ... no dollars. Only euros

Flyngirl, You have to understand that all sweeteners are very bad for you. I tasted Stevia once, just the powder. It tasted chemical, not sweet at all. Being chemically sensitive, I'm like a barometer. Stevia comes from a plant that grows, i think, somewhere in South America. Women there use it when they want to abort their babies. It's detrimental to you health even before they chemicalize it. So they decided to make a sweetener out of it because it is sweet.

You learned to like all the foods you now love. You can learn to like new foods but you have to get used to them. Once you get the chemicals and sugar out of your system, you won't want them anymore. That's the way it works.

I have stainless steel and cast iron. A little cast iron pot that I cook rice in. I found I could roast veggies in the pot on top of the stove. I live in a small place so I use the oven for storing some pots and pans. I just bought a big cast iron chicken fryer, with a good heavy tight lid so I can roast more veggies at a time. I dearly love roasted veggies! I also have a small cast iron skillet for tons of stuff.

I have a stainless steel dutch oven that is waterless. I can cook nishimi veggies in it and they are so delicious. You learn along the way.

Flyngirl, i think I'm overdoing the 'encouragement', I'm just so concerned about your health that I have thrown too much at you at one time. It's difficult enough to learn something new, you don't need to be inundated with info.

I think I'm being too helpful because I had to do it on my own. But, that may be the best way, you only have yourself to rely on. Which is much what you have to do anyway, rely on yourself, no matter how much encouragement you have. I'll wait till you ask me a specific question and if I don't know, I'll help you find it. Okay?

I don't think you're overdoing it, and I really do appreciate the encouragement from all of you.

Actually this forum, and our discussions, and my lovely Dirkettes on Skype ( ) have been really good for me... because I'm pretty much surrounded by temptation and triggers for my food cravings. I was doing okay yesterday when this whole thing was new and I was out buying stuff and excited about it. Then I got achy and I was okay with that, because I know it's part of the process.

I am having a hard time with the cravings, though. Everything I see reminds me of food I want to eat. It's tough with the family around. I get up in the morning and give the kids their donuts and cereal and milk. Then I watch them eat and I clean up the dishes. Then my husband is up drinking soda and eating chips, and the kids want hot dogs for lunch. Then there are milk and cookies for snack. Then Mark cooks dinner (thank God he's the one that cooks) - and the whole house smells like baked chicken and pasta. And I've barricaded myself in the bedroom with a cup of Genmaicha tea (this is probably my least favorite, a green tea, but it's not bad and has very little caffeine). I've read Cooking with Brown Rice and Cooking the Whole Foods way so I can think about what I'll eat after the fast. Literally read them cover to cover. I hope Sugar Blues gets delivered soon.

But I'm going slowly mad trying to think about anything but the smell of delicious baked chicken legs with breadcrumbs wafting in here from the other room.

And so ends Day 2.

Still I think I did overdo and you're being kind. This is why I'm not a Dirkette, which I don't mind. I could never be one - I'm more like a den mother

The way your family eats, Flyngirl, you really need this to help not only yourself but them.

I know the feeling, Flyngirl. Temptation is all around. I've had the same problem when I started. Everywhere I looked (mostly in the store) there was food I couldn't eat/purchase anymore. It's really hard but I can promise you it will get better. You learn to 'deal' with it so to speak. So you don't like Genmaicha?
And don't worry we'll keep up the support and encouragement

Day 3 @ 0700 - Weight: 127 lbs (57.6 kg)

Got up and took weight again, then went back to bed again. So I'm up now, it's 0900, I've got a bowl of rice and water boiling for Bancha tea. Bancha is definitely my favorite tea so I'm going to let myself have a cup each morning after breakfast. But I really need to drink more water - woke up with a dehydration headache again this morning, and my lips are all cracked. I didn't lose more weight, so that's good. My weight fluctuates a lot anyway, so I'm not too concerned if I drop a few pounds over a week.

What's interesting is that smells are stronger for me now (like when I was pregnant). I left all the dishes last night because I was tired, and that was a mistake. I got up this morning to chicken bones, caked on breadcrumbs, a cheese plate, etc. and it all grossed me out. I asked my son to get his breakfast after I left the kitchen. I hope I get a little energy soon because I have errands to run today, and housework I didn't get done yesterday...

I'm really worried about tomorrow because my day is jam-packed now. I've got ground school from 0800-1200, then an appointment in Scottsdale at 1330, then picking up the kids at 1440 and rushing back for a meeting at 1530, then I have to pick up my car at the shop by 1700. So I'm planning to take a large Tupperware of rice on the road with me in the morning and just pick at it whenever I get time. Of course I need to have the energy to do all this, and in a typical Monday I drink about 6 cups of coffee/tea throughout the day. Maybe I'll take a thermos of tea with me too... might as well not worry about it today.

Otherwise I'm feeling good and still devoted to brown rice.

Getting ready for a rice dinner. My copy of Sugar Blues arrived today, so I'm going to have dinner and curl up with the book. More tomorrow.

I'm eating less today but still have a reasonable appetite. Three meals of 1.5 cups rice. Lots of water between meals.

Day 4 @ 0700 - Weight: 126.6 lbs (57.4 kg)

My cooking (memory?) skills were apparent last night. Did you know, when you burn an entire pot of rice it kinda smells like popcorn?

Heading out for my day. Have very little rice left that's not burned, so I'm soaking a new pot for later. More later!

Well, I'm nauseous. I'm forcing down rice and it's making me more nauseated. Worst possible day for this to happen. I have this class in 5 minutes. *sigh*

Flyngirl, doesn't your holistic doctor give a free consultation? Now might be the time to take it, if this gets worse. Something to think about....

Your digestive system is probably feeling the effects of eating a lot more fiber than you're used to without anything else. Not unusual.

I wouldn't be concerned about the nausea except for the meds you're on. They sound pretty powerful. I know you're feeling better now, so carry on!

Happy that you have so much encouragement!

Thanks, ladies! I'm feeling better now. I've eaten a little less today but I've been hydrating a lot and no headaches. So, yay! I don't have much energy though. Maybe I'm just exhausted from the day I've had...

Anyway I had about 1/2 cup total between breakfast and lunch, a small snack this afternoon (maybe 1/4 cup) and I'm trying to eat a little more for dinner. Good night!

Day 5 @ 0700 - Weight: 125 lbs (56.7 kg)

Good morning! Feeling better so far today. A little bit of hot water makes rice cereal, right? Having 1/2 cup before I head to work.

My belly is getting very flat. I really like the way my skin feels using the coconut oil, Ojai! And to think how much money I've wasted at Bath and Body Works. Haha...

It's also good for your hair if it is dry or frizzy. It has to be warmed a tiny bit and applied with a cotton ball to the scalp.

Doing pretty well tonight. But I gotta tell ya, I'm not sure if I'll ever be able to eat brown rice again after this fast... LOL

Sure you will, because you will be using dressings, and making srit-frys and all sorts of stuff. You're doing great!

Day 6 @ 0700 - Weight: 124 lbs (56.2 kg)

So far, so good. No headaches, no nausea. Few hunger pangs. Boiling water for my "rice cereal" now, and making Kombu rice for my dinner tonight. Of course I've overbooked myself today between class & meetings so now I'm leaving here at 0730 and won't be back to cook my soaking rice until 1530 -- and I didn't plan well so I've got exactly 1 cup of rice to last me that long (including breakfast).

But such is life, and I'm a spaceshot sometimes.

Have a good day, all!
